Biography

After graduating from Newcastle University with an Agriculture degree specialising in animal production, Catherine worked as a nutritional adviser to dairy farmers in the North West.

In the name of Lifelong Learning she came back to the North East to undertake a PhD in Cattle Welfare and Behaviour.

Prior to taking up a lecturing post at Houghall College, she was involved with a widening participation initiative in Newcastle schools. This “progression coach” role was to raise awareness of higher education, raise aspiration and support matriculation of learners from non-traditional backgrounds, this role has subsequently become a strand of “AimHigher”. This experience gave her a good insight into the barriers presented to non-traditional learners and an opportunity to identify and innovate strategies of good practice.

Since 2003 she has lectured at Houghall (County Durham’s land-based college) in Animal Management. Her lectures included a strong higher education focus designed to increase awareness of the opportunity HE presents and help prepare vocational students for the transition to study at HE. She also lectures at Newcastle University on the Animal Science and Companion Animal Science degrees. She is delighted to take up this VETNET LLN post to contribute her combined Aimhigher expertise and Animal related qualifications and lecturing experience.

Favourite pastimes include comedy (being amused rather than amusing) especially an annual excursion to the Edinburgh festival; making the most of cultural opportunities in the north east: live music, art, she has her own full size cow parade cow, trying to relax with family (which usually involves helping with a horse castration as her sister is a vet), skiing, cooking her pets and a complete disregard for punctuation.
