Biography
Nia first graduated in Psychology from Cardiff University, but then left academia to work in the horse industry. Starting right at the bottom as a working pupil, she worked her way up the British Horse Society ladder of vocational qualifications, and was herself heavily involved in student training.
She returned to University to complete a MSc in Equine Studies, and then joined the lecturing team in the Equine department at Warwickshire College tutoring students and delivering a range of FE and HE courses. From there she progressed to the Training department of the British Horse Society, as course leader for the innovative Equine Sports Coaching Degree which was developed in conjunction with Worcester University. This was the first ever instance of a collaboration between HEI and a Sports Governing Body and was ground breaking in that it allowed partial accreditation for vocational coaching qualifications.
A change of direction (some would call it Lifelong Learning, others a mid life crisis!) led to a return to Higher Education to complete a PhD in Widening Participation as part of a HEFCE funded ‘Potential to Succeed’ project. On completing this, the VETNET LLN Regional manager vacancy came up just at the right time, providing an ideal opportunity to combine an interest in the veterinary industry with a commitment to Widening Participation.
Outside of work, Nia’s main interests revolve around looking after and competing her two horses, which leaves little time or money free for anything else!
