Careers Advisors' event is a great success!

“A good day all round… found the information on careers options very useful – didn’t realise there were so many!”

This was the feedback from just one of the twenty delegates who attended the Central Region’s CPD event at Nottingham Trent University (School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences) on 27th January 2010.

The aim of the day was to provide information and guidance to those advising young people considering careers in animal-related areas.  Delegates came from a variety of organisations, with Connexions staff and FE lecturers particularly well represented.

Talks were given on the career routes and various qualification pathways in a range of relevant sectors (Veterinary Nursing, Wildlife Conservation, Animal and Equine) as well as information that students may require about applying to University, such as finance issues and UCAS application form completion.

The day was enhanced with a tour of the Animal, Equine and Vet Nursing teaching and learning facilities at Brackenhurst, though the countryside walk was sadly rained off.

The feedback from delegates was unanimously positive. Careers advisors previously unfamiliar with the sector expressed surprise at the range of careers available, especially in the equine industry.

Hopefully, they will return to their roles with a clearer idea of how to respond to learners coming to them and saying: “I want to work with animals but don’t know what to do…”
